Want A Space Shuttle? It’s Free!

Posted on: December 19, 2008

If you’re looking for the perfect Christmas gift for the space geek in your family, NASA will be giving away its space shuttles, once they’re retired.  Well, okay, that is a little misleading – they’re giving them away, but asking for $42 million to move them.  And they’re looking at schools and museums, primarily.

The shuttles will be retired in 2010 – unless Barack Obama decides to extend their service dates.  In which case, you won’t be able to get your hands on one of these shuttles.

Speaking from an Ottawa perspective, I think it would be really awesome if the museum of Science & Technology shelled out the money to get a shuttle to display in their space exhibit.  From what I remember, that exhibit is already pretty awesome – how much cooler would it be with a REAL shuttle?
