I haven’t explored this venue too much, but there seems to be at least 75 free songs available through eMusic.  25 via Car & Driver, and 50 via Pizza Hut.  I’m really not sure what hoops you have to jump through, if any, but it’s worth a try.  These songs are free of any DRM and work on any MP3 player.

Who says that big corporations don’t give back to their customers?  I don’t say it, at least not all the time.  Anyway, Amazon.com is giving away a total of 773 free MP3’s – and they’re also DRM-free – from their music store.  The selection varies but there seems to be some quality stuff there to download.

Okay, so label me an idiot, please.  I barely just finished going through the “A’s” on the SXSW torrents – there’s no way I’m listening through all of this music in a timely manner and picking out favourites.  Thus far, the two I can think of off the top of my head (because the ipod touch doesn’t have a decent way of checking song ratings without playing the song first…thanks apple!), The Arkells “Oh, The Boss is Coming!” and Arts the Beatdoctor.  Well I don’t know the song from him but it’s fun.

There are a lot of songs that I haven’t listened to yet, but I strongly encourage you to check them out.  I think I’m going to have to actually look at the list of artists and make decisions based on what other people have said about them.

6 gigs of music is a lot :(

SXSW'09

SXSW'09

All the buzz this week has been about SXSW, the music festival down in Austin, Texas.  It blows me away how many Canadians are attending this thing, but unfortunately I’m not one of them.  Oh well – not all is lost.  I have a link to 6GB of music from SXSW, provided free of charge via torrent.  And it’s legally free, not “torrent free”.  It’s all music provided by SXSW, compiled into a torrent.

I haven’t listened to any of it yet, but it’s split up into three different parts.  I will listen to part one first and pick out some favourites.

And remember, this is a torrent download – so please remember to keep seeding once you’ve finished downloading.  It took me a ridiculously long time to get these songs because not enough people are seeding.

Fans of Metric are probably already aware that the release date is being moved up to April 7th from the original date of April 14th.  Great news!  It’s always fun when an album you’re anticipating is being released earlier.

Anyway, thanks to Chromewaves for setting this one up.  It’s not a free download, but you can stream Metric’s album Fantasies in full.

You know, sometimes I really like coincidences.  Like when I hear a song in a CBC Radio 3 Podcast from the beginning of February on my drive in to work, and read a review of that very song when I get here.

Jon-Rae Fletcher is a singer I praised a while back; his latest song, Oh, Maria, is not with his band The River – no, unfortunately they broke up.  The key thing is that this song is great, and I love it.  The podcast I heard it on was #194: Julie Doiron, The Hylozoists, Jon-Rae Fletcher.  Incidentally, there’s a really good School of Rock feature by The Hylozoists on that podcast, too.

Also be sure to check out #156 – Sloan, Elliot Brood and Jon-Rae Fletcher for a really great feature on Jon-Rae Fletcher.

Here’s a link to the review and the MP3, from today’s Herohill post:

Happy Friday!  Last week saw some sappy love tunes courtesy of Cover Lay Down, but this week sees 11 free albums!  The list is courtesy of The Good, The Bad, and The Unknown, a blog which makes top 11 lists of…everything.  Usually music.

Check out their February 10th post for what they consider the best free albums online; I wanted to feature this last week, but Valentine’s Day was just around the corner…
